Naples to Rome 14th September 2010

We left early and got a taxi out the front of the hotel.  There is a set price of 15.50 euro with some allowance for heavy traffic – we agreed to 20 euro with no tip.  The drive was crazy – we are sure they have their own system of driving.  If you need three lanes and there are only two beep your horn and make a third.  They beep all the time and now we know why.

We sat at the station glad to be there and to be in one piece.  Our train trip was pleasant and only one hour long.  We arrived at 1pm and by 1.10pm we had walked to our hotel.  We got a little settled and then went out and bought some lunch, which we brought back to eat in our room.  Rest time - tuned into sleep time.  We woke at 6.30 and got ready to go out for dinner.  We walked in the direction of the Trevi Fountain.  We stopped a long way short of that and had a lovely dinner at an outdoor cafĂ©.  Rome will have to wait till tomorrow – home to bed

Naples - Day Trip to Pompeii 13th September 2010

We decided to catch the bus to the train station.  Unfortunately we were given poor information from the hotel, so instead of buying tickets from the tobacco shop before we boarded the bus we got on thinking we could buy them on board.  A friendly passenger saw us looking uncertain and started chatting to us.  She told us that we risked a 78 euro fine if caught on the bus without a ticket and as it was a peak hour the likelihood of being caught was quite high.  Great!!  We decided to get off the bus at the next stop and walked the rest of the way, about ½ k.
A bit more confusion in buying our tickets for the correct destination, but eventually we were on the correct train heading for Pompeii.  It was an interesting trip – the train and the stations were so covered in graffiti it was nearly impossible to know what stops we were at.  The train windows had been covered with painting and all of the signs announcing the station names were completely painted over as well.  We counted the number of stops and hoped for the best.  We need not have worried as other tourists all got up at the same station so we knew we were right. Phew..
WE bought a book and a map of the site and also some frozen water, and got to the entrance.
Pompeii is huge, lots to see and more than could be covered in a day.  We saw the main things.  Disappointing that our map was not correct, but we managed.  The city had been a thriving, large and well to do with all of the forums, court houses, shops, boarding houses, even a brothel.  Most of the houses we saw had a portico and then a central courtyard with rooms set around.  The walls decorated with rendering and then paintings.  Most of the walls were down to just brick.  They were square bricks laid in a diamond pattern.  The forum baths was the best and most interesting for me, as well as the Amphitheatre and the arena.
We had been there 5 hours and still hadn’t covered the whole site, but decided it was time to go back to catch the train home to Naples.
A bit of fun to find how to get to the correct side of the rail line to head home.  We couldn’t find where to validate our tickets so we just boarded the train.  At Naples station the ticket inspector looked like he was going to fine us but a tourist friendly inspector came along and said it was ok.  Another phew….

Back to the hotel by taxi.  The taxi driver was a nice man, he said the traffic was light compared to normal – to us it was bedlam.  Time for a rest then dinner in the hotel.

Naples 12th September 2010

We took the train from Florence to Rome and then changed to the train to Naples.  We spoke to two Australian couples who were travelling together.  They asked if we could swap seats with them so they could sit around the table and play cards.  That was fine with us, and we moved to a two seat bench across the aisle.  This started a conversation when we heard each other’s Australian accents.  We were amazed to find out that these people knew Pop’s sister and brother in law.  It was lovely to hear about their trip and talk about ours.
It was after 2pm by the time we arrived in Naples.  We needed to get a taxi to our hotel so we got into the queue.  Naples is crazy!!!  The people yell, the traffic just seems to make up the rules as they push their way through, honking horns.  One Italian woman was so furious because she thought the taxi queue starting point had changed, as she saw it, and she was now in the middle of the queue instead of next to go.  She was screaming abuse at every one.  Finally one taxi driver called her and her husband (a small hunched over man who was trying to disappear) over and he started putting their cases into his taxi boot.  She was still yelling and cursing at him so much that he grabbed their bags out of the boot and tossed them onto the road.  You could imagine how this ignited even more yelling and chaos.  Taxis were having trouble moving anywhere.  The drivers started just picking up any one close to them, that is how we got into a taxi and were soon whisked away to the yelling and cursing directed at us this time.  Welcome to Naples!!
After a nightmare trip through the traffic we were relieved to arrive at our hotel.  The hotel is 30 storeys high and we are on the 28th   with a fabulous view.  We went for a walk to get some late lunch. We enjoyed the best pizza we had had since arriving in Italy.  We walked on towards the port, and then on towards Santa Lucia.  Fabulous views across the bay.  We walked back to the hotel past a huge square and an arts building.
We were so tired after our long walk we just had our dinner at the hotel restaurant and had an early night.
