Venice 5th September 2010

The Hotel Bruno gave us a complimentary trio out to Murano Island to see the glass blowing and a display of the finished product.  We were collected in a speed boat and whisked across to the island.  I bought a beautiful jug and a few little pieces.  The glass work was fabulous and well worth our trip.  We took a ferry back to the main island and took our goodies back to the hotel.  Just across from our hotel was our next destination – a nice little restaurant for lunch.  We then went for a wander around the shops and bought a few gifts to take home.
Today was a special day in Venice.  We were not quite sure what it was all about but it was a regatta that centred around the Grand Canal.   Many boats, with their occupants dressed in all sorts of different brightly coloured outfits went floating by.  We sat on the crowded water side.  Next to us was an Austrian girl who told us she had come to Venice for the weekend.  She said that once she left the car park she would be home in 3 hours.  As Australians it is hard to imagine being in a different country in 3 hours.  How lovely would it be to travel through Europe with so many opportunities to see such fabulous places?
We tried to go to the Rialto Bridge but it was just too crowded so we gave up and went back to the hotel for a rest.  Later we went out for dinner and then off for our late night, moon lit trip on a gondola – how romantic?  It was everything I had dreamed it would be.  Our gondolier was Max (something Italian) he has been a gondolier for 23 years.  He was a short but he was extremely strong.  The gondola just glided along the water. The reflections were beautiful.  We went past the home of Marco polo Casanova and Vivaldi.
We went back into San Marco Square and listened to the musical groups – more like a mini orchestra – a violinist, piano accordion, clarinet, piano and a big base.  The crowd applauded loudly and the band members stood for the ovation.  It was wonderful.  It was now 11pm and so time to take a quiet stroll back to our hotel.  What a fabulous day!
