Posted some postcards, had breakfast, and said farewell to
Camprodon. We headed off to the French
border. We took photos of Mollo – a
popular ski destination in winter – definitely no snow today as it is meant to
reach 30 again. The roads very windy and
lots of cyclists and even a runner. We
got onto the super highway – past Ceret and headed to Montpellier. We stopped for lunch at a huge, rather fancy,
cafeteria (even had 2 grand pianos) just past Narbonne. We set off again and drove onto Arles.
We had intended to just have a rest and an afternoon
coffee. That was until we discovered the
old town – really old town. It has an
arena, a smaller version of the colosseum which was built 100 bc and an
amphitheatre from the same era. After
our coffee we booked into a Best Western Hotel for two nights. Time for a shower and a snooze and then at
7pm we headed out on foot to see the sights and get some dinner. This is an absolutely magical place.
We found a lovely café facing the arena and had a delicious
meal. Pop took some beautiful photos of
the evening sky. Gorgeous pink and
yellow tones filled the sky. The light
was very different – just like the light in a Van Gogh painting. He was hospitalised here in Arles when he cut
off his ear. He stayed in Arles for
nearly two years and did some of his best known work here.
On our stroll home we saw a film on at the Amphitheatre and
went in to watch. It was ‘Spartacus’ –
we thought it was great as t was in English with French sub titles. We left at interval as it was late and the
seats hard and difficult with my back still giving me problems.
